What is Pottery Used For?

What Is A Fire Tree

Fire Trees

Fire trees are large hollow tree like structures made from clay.
I would say paper clay is used, because it is much stronger than just clay.
It is about eight feet high and maybe six foot across at the bottom and there are large openings made down on the trunks of the trees.
The trunk is tapered upward and branches are formed, many holes are made in the branches and small holes are left in the ends of each branch.

Wood is thrown into a large opening in the trunk and when night falls, the fires are lit and orange and red lights glow in the dark and sparks shoot out of the open holes of the branches.
They create lovely spectacles of light and were a huge hit on the islands of Hawaii.

It is a tradition in some pottery schools to make these fire trees signifying graduation.

We must always change, renew and rejuvenate ourselves, otherwise we harden.

Have you ever come up with a good idea while working with your pottery or ceramics and thought that you would like to share it with others? You have? Well, why not send it to us and we will add it to the tips page for all to see.

There are signs that pottery and ceramics are losing appeal for a younger generation. There are pottery and ceramic departments closing in teaching institutions throughout the country. The common understanding is that younger students are reluctant to commit themselves to the intensive study required to master pottery and ceramics. Why spend three years to learn just one art form when you can pick up PhotoShop in less than a week? Pottery wheels lie idle as students flock to the computer labs. With all the stressful actions in the world today, releasing that stress through pottery and ceramics would be very beneficial to ones well being.
