HIGHLIGHTSUse a toothpick to put a small white dot on the upper part of an eye to create eye highlights.Make sure and put the dot in the same place so both eyes match. FINE LINESUse a toothpick to make fine lines such as eyelashes, eyebrow hairs, stitch marks on puffy objects or dots on dotted swiss patterns.METALLIC PAINTSBase coat a project in flat black to make metallic paints really stand out.Dry brush the metallic color over the black. TEXTUREUse textured paints such as granite stone and puffy paints in small areas.Resist using too much so if you make a mistake, you won't have to do a lot of heavy sanding. GOLD LEAFStart with a piece that has been base coated in terra-cotta, black or deep green to achieve the look of gold or silver leaf.Pour gold or silver paint on a tile. Crumple up a plastic bag. Pat the plastic in the paint and then dab it on a paper towel. Press the bag onto the piece randomly until you have the look that you want. PATINAStart with a piece that has been base coated in a metallic color for a patina look.Antique with a medium green translucent stain. You do this by brushing on and then taking a soft rag or Viva paper towel, which is what I use and carefully wipe the stain from the raised parts of your project. WET LOOKUse a matte finish on the entire project except eyes, lips and animal noses.Use a high gloss finish on the eyes, animal noses and lips to make them stand out. By using a matte paint on the animals or ceramic pieces, you can paint hair or texture on the them.

All About Clay The best way of starting out is to take a few lessons. You will probably waste quite a bit in materials when you first get started. Figuring out how to truly make handmade pottery correctly and shape into what you want it to be can be quite an ordeal. The different tools that a normal shop will have can be fun to try. You will soon see which ones you like to use the most and then when you are ready you will know which ones to buy. With the help of the internet, you can now purchase most if not all of your ceramic and pottery tools and supplies online. We are located far from any well supplied dealers and yet working with reliable ceramic and pottery suppliers online has allowed us to recieve most of our orders within a timely manner. When you get all set up, just enjoy the hobby and have fun at it. Some people get pretty serious and start selling their creations at craft fairs and small stores, but others just like to create items for themselves, relatives, and friends. Whichever kind of handmade pottery you desire to endeavor, enjoy the hobby and have fun doing it.
