Cleaning GreenwarePottery Tips and TechniquesIf your greenware is not cleaned right, it won't make any difference how good you finish the piece, you will still be able to see the places that haven't been cleaned correctly. |

VERY IMPORTANT!!!Be sure that the greenware is completely dry.The rule of thumb for checking to see if a piece of greenware is dry, touch it to your forearm or cheek and if it feels warm it is dry, if it feels cold it is wet. If it's wet and still soft, you risk denting, poking a hole in it, disfiguring or breaking it by unknowingly squeezing it too hard.  .jpg){kind=small} Scrape the mold seams with the edge of your seam cleaning tool.  Go over the area lightly with fine sandpaper or sanding file and then wipe it lightly with a slightly damp sponge to smooth the sanding marks from the surface.   Use a texture tool to fix spots where the texture has been removed during cleaning.  Turn an item that needs to be even on top or bottom, such as a cup, bowl or statue upside down on a piece of fine screen or sandpaper placed on a flat surface. Twist it back and forth gently. Rubbing it back and forth will create unwanted grooves on the rim.  Use a spoolie to clean small holes.  Apply underglazes and glazes at this time if you plan to use them. This is called a Hake brush and and is the best to use, because it holds a lot of glaze. Your project is now ready to be fired. You can either fire it yourself or take it to a ceramic shop and they will fire it for you for about a third of whatever your paid for your greenware. Tips The cleaning tool has two ends. The sharp triangular end is best for cleaning curved edges and flat surfaces. The round end is best for grooves and areas with lots of detail. There are many different kinds of texture tools. Two good all purpose ones to have are a stylus and a tool that resembles a small wire brush.
